Spring Break Travel Will Hit an All-Time High This Year

For airlines that means 140 million passengers, all looking for fun in the sun.

According to new research by the industry trade group Airlines for America, spring break travel will hit a record high in 2016, with 140 million passengers planning a trip between the months of March and April. That’s a three percent increase over last year, when 136.2 million Americans flocked to their favorite hot spots for a little sun and sand (or not). The main reason for the uptick: Airfare is cheaper and flights are more accessible.

“The continued growth in passenger volumes can be attributed to the accessibility and affordability of air travel today,” said John Heimlich, Vice President and Chief Economist for Airlines for America, in a news release. “To meet the extra demand, airlines are deploying new and larger aircraft on many routes.”

So which airports will be busiest this spring break? Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (already the most highly trafficked airport in the world) will see record numbers, as will O’Hare International in Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth International, and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). To manage the crush of spring breakers, airports are planning in advance, with some offering additional security checkpoints, free parking, and if you’re flying through Dallas-Fort Worth, free smoothies on Fridays. Add a little rum and you can get spring break started before you even take off.
